THE BELL GOAT’S SPEECH.
THE GOATS’ GREETING.
And behold it is the custom in these strenuous days for the Goats to meet together on the Sabbath Day and to eat and drink and to make merrie.
And it is likewise the goodly custom for the Goats on the eve of the departure of one of their number to gather together and to wish the departing Goat the best of luck wherever he may roam.
And as it has truly been inscribed upon the antient tablets, “It is not the value of the remembrance, but the spirit which animates the sender.” be it known hereby that we do sincerely wish the very best of luck to the Cardinal Goat, and, should he so desire, a safe and speedy return to Rokkosan.
“Here’s luck to Vaughan!!”

THE PERFECT MAN.
There is a man who never drinks,
Nor smokes, nor chews, nor swears:
Who never gambles, never flirts,
And shuns all sinful snares,
He’s paralyzed.
There is a man who never does
Anything that is not right;
His wife can tell just where he is,
At morning, noon and night,
He’s dead.

Royal and Ancient Order of Mountain GoatsのH.

In the “Pedestrian,” No. 15, the Press organ of the Kobe Walking Society, dated March 31st, 1915, the following paragraph appeared on the second page:—
MOUNTAIN HOSPITALITY.
Five English-speaking Japanese members of our Society have been invited to “Rokko dinner” on the 28th instant by the “Royal and Ancient Order of Mountain Goats”—Messrs. H. E. Daunt and J. P. Warren. They were taken to the “Daunt’s Rock” on Rokkosan from the Ashiya Valley via the “Pie Hut” Ridge and the Bellevue. The unique ridge was quite new to the K. W. S. members whose rambling was almost always prescribed within the limit of Kobe hills. From the stone shrine of the Bellevue they all thought that the path was faded, so that no access could be obtained to the “Blue Lake” of Oku-ike, which is the source of the beautiful streams of the Ashiya Valley. This gap they now filled, thanks to the guidance of Mr. Daunt, by this “Goats’ Walk” which, favoured by an ideal weather, they have thoroughly enjoyed, to say nothing of the “Goats Entertainment” with “rare delicacies from the mountain and sea” as the Japanese expression will have it sankai-no-chinmi! In their return trip to Futatabi via Tokugawa path and 20 Crossings they have, also, learned from Mr. Daunt of a new route to the Maya Northern Ridge from the Twenty Crossings. For this “Goats’ Walk” only the writer was free, for the first time, from his usual care, the flock led in safety by the indefatigable Leader of the “Royal and Ancient Order of Mountain Goats” to whom every nook and crevice of all our Rokko and Maya ridges has been accessible without any difficulties.

Warren, O. M. Poole and Daunt.
Tram to Kumochi—Gomo, Cascade Valley, Poole’s Ridge or “The Goats Test.” Bad weather. Plenty of rock climbing. Came out below Mayasan on road from Gomo. The following is the result of Mr. Nagao’s investigations with regard to this ridge, which has some of the finest rock climbs in the Kobe hills:—

“The mountain is called Sabutaniyama, but commonly known amongst the local people as ‘Tatami-ishi’ on account of the presence of a large number of stones and rocks. The large rock by the side of the path is named Tatamiiwa. (The word tatami as applied to rocks denotes flat or square and generally large rocks.) This mountain is said to be one of the old battlefields where the famous warrior Benkei had a fight. There are two large stones, round in shape, called ‘Benkei’s Chikara-ishi,’ one in the stream of the valley and the other on the mountain. There also lies the Benkei’s ‘Torii-iwa,’ on which the pictures of torii are reported to have been impressed by Benkei (who is noted for the wonderful strength) with his finger or fingers. This rock is now covered with moss and therefore the figures of torii are invisible by a casual climber, but the kago man who supplied this information can locate the spot, if necessary. It is also said that there is Benkei’s ‘Nuke-ana’—a loop-hole—being a deep cave, through which Benkei escaped towards Nunobiki waterfall or valley. In olden times a number of mushroom hunters were killed on this particular mountain by the falling of loose stones and through the viper’s bite. From the top of this peak a good view can be had of ‘Tengu-iwa’ forming the highest point of Kibukuroyama on the immediate north across the valley below and on the west of Doctor’s Nob.”
